Tyla Shines at 2024 MTV EMAs, Winning Three Major Awards
South African sensation Tyla celebrated a career-defining night at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) last night, Sunday 10 November, winning awards for Best R&B, Best Afrobeats, and Best African Act.
Known for her genre-blending sound, the 22-year-old songstress faced tough competition in the R&B category, outshining artists like Kehlani, SZA, and Usher.
During the red carpet proceedings in Manchester, England, Tyla paid homage to her idol, Aaliyah, by wearing a Roberto Cavalli dress inspired by the late singer’s iconic 2000 Video Music Awards outfit.
The hitmaker was joined on stage by her sister, Sydney Seethal, to accept the Afrobeats award, where she expressed her pride in African music’s growing global influence. Teary-eyed, she acknowledged Aaliyah’s influence on her music while expressing disbelief at her own win, especially in such a significant dress.
“I’m so honoured to be winning this award,” Tyla said tearfully, before adding: “Thank you, guys, so much. Thank you to God, obviously, and thank you to Afrobeats. It has opened so many doors for African music.”
Later, she thrilled the audience with performances of her hit song “Water” and her latest single, “Push 2 Start”. With three EMA wins, Tyla’s star continues to rise, shining a global spotlight on African music.
